Model Cannon Post SAW – 1905 – 1906 Navy Seaman Gunners Class, Navy Yard, Washington, D.C.; Class Mechanical Engineering Project To Build a Replica of a Piece of Heavy Artillery , 12″ Ship or Disapearing Coast Defense Gun

Below are a number of photos of this interesting model.  I found it in a dumpster of a home that was being cleaned out. I could not believe anyone would throw out this hand made model of a Navy 12″  gun ?. It looks as if it was to test the seaman on the skill of mechanical engineering and precise rendering from paper to a physcial model

It has great patina on the brass base

Here is what it looks like in its entirely, the barrel actually moves up and down

Here is a image of the guns cradle

The base that it sits on is oddly shaped, kind of offset from being completely round. The mahogany wood has taken on a rich milk chocolate patina.

It seems that it was once plated, for there is remnants of some chrome like color on places where it was not handled

I wish I had more on this item, but until then, enjoy the images.

Here’s a look at the description that  was done with an individual die for each letter and number.

Unfortunately there is no name attached to this model. We will never know who the maker

As you can see it is a well made model. Who knows there might be someone who has more information on this item and will let us know.  Until then here it is for your enjoyment.

The bottom has the original felt that was attached so many years ago
